This dance class is designed for preK to middle schoolers with special needs. Our beginner-level dance and movement classes currently take place through Zoom and provide a fun outlet for children to let out energy and meet new people. The free class is also designed to help refine motor skills, concentration, social/communication abilities, and general happiness. Dance and movement therapy has been proven to have significant benefits for children with special needs; it gives the children an immersive experience where they are challenged to carefully observe and imitate the movements of the instructor or based on the music. This allows the children to develop greater awareness over themselves, their surroundings, and other people.
Hip-hop/K-pop: This class focuses on learning hip-hop and k-pop choreography and dance moves in a fun and supportive environment. Each session will begin with a warm-up, and then students will learn a 15-30 second hip-hop or k-pop dance segment to the latest hits. Every week, students will learn a completely new dance segment, so it won't build off of previous weeks' content.
Choreography: This class will include warm-up, show-and-tell sessions, improv activities, Just Dance, and across-the-floor sequences featuring jumps and turns. Instructors will teach students choreography that builds on what was learned in previous weeks. The aim is to work on the same dance over several weeks, allowing students to build confidence and skill. At the end of the school year, we will have a special performance to showcase the dances to parents.
Ballet/Yoga: Ballet and yoga class will alternate each week. The ballet segment will cover basic positions for arms and feet, as well as foundational ballet moves like plié, tendu, jeté, etc. As students become more comfortable with the moves, we will introduce simple combinations. Make sure to have a chair or a table ready to use as a barre! The yoga segment will focus on a series of yoga poses designed to stretch and strengthen the body while calming the mind. Occasionally, we will incorporate Cosmic Kids Yoga for fun.
